A Kansas City man named Anthony M. Alford, aged 46, has been charged with making a hoax call that resulted in a lockdown of an Internal Revenue Service office and the detainment of an employee. The incident occurred on September 10 when Alford called 911 to falsely report that the employee, known as “Victim One”, was armed and threatening to shoot up the IRS building in Kansas City. Following the call, law enforcement authorities responded to the scene, detained Victim One, and locked down a section of the building. However, it was later revealed that Victim One was unarmed and the call was a hoax.
According to reports, Victim One had been in a relationship with Alford for about a month and was trying to break up with him. Alford, who exhibited controlling and possessive behavior according to Victim One, made the hoax call in order to cause trouble. When questioned by investigators, Alford admitted to making the false report with the intention of stirring up conflict.
The criminal complaint against Alford was filed last Friday, and he made his initial court appearance on Tuesday. He will remain in federal custody until a detention hearing scheduled for Friday. The investigation into the incident was conducted by various law enforcement agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Protective Service, the Kansas City Police Department, and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
