Business owners in Kansas City’s River Market are facing challenges due to changes in parking prices that have been introduced in the area. “Surge parking” was initiated this summer, leading to a decrease in foot traffic and business for local establishments. This has prompted Arthur Leduc, the owner of KC Taco Company, to launch a petition calling for a reduction in parking costs and an end to surge pricing.
Since the implementation of surge pricing, Leduc has seen the departure of five businesses from the River Market, as well as a loss of employees. He notes that parking rates can skyrocket to $30 during special events and KC Current games, which has negatively impacted business owners in the area.
The petition has garnered support from around 30 businesses in the River Market who are experiencing similar difficulties. Geoff Myer, Manager of Planters Seed & Spice, highlights the issue of limited free parking spots due to the surge pricing restrictions, leading to complaints from customers.
The situation has escalated to the point where customers like Mary Raymond are considering avoiding the River Market altogether due to the hassles of navigating the parking system. Mayor Quinton Lucas’ office has acknowledged the concerns raised by business owners and has expressed a commitment to finding solutions that benefit everyone. Councilman Eric Bunch, who oversees the River Market area, acknowledges the need for further discussion on how these parking changes affect local businesses and residents.
Leduc hopes that the petition will lead to positive changes and alleviate the challenges faced by business owners in the River Market.
