Former President Donald Trump suggested, without evidence, that Iran could be responsible for two apparent assassination attempts he has faced this year. These claims were made without any public statements from authorities to support them. The campaign for Trump, who is running for president as a GOP candidate, stated that he was briefed on specific threats from Iran to assassinate him.
In his campaign speech in North Carolina, Trump thanked Congress for increasing funding for the Secret Service and vowed to retaliate against any foreign country that threatened a presidential candidate. He also mentioned his plans to expand tariffs, which he believes have made him a target for foreign governments.
On the other hand, Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris delivered an economy-focused speech in Pennsylvania, emphasizing her commitment to middle-class economic priorities. She plans to boost research in various technologies to encourage innovation and experimentation in her approach to the presidency.
Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, echoed Trump’s nativist stance on immigration, alleging that immigrants in the country illegally were responsible for driving down employment and wages for U.S.-born workers. Both Trump and Vance tied immigration issues to the economy in their campaign appearances.
Lastly, Trump announced his plans to return to Butler, Pennsylvania, the site of the first assassination attempt on him. A bipartisan Senate report concluded that the U.S. Secret Service failed to adequately secure the outdoor rally leading to the shooting incident. The report was commissioned by Senators from both parties specializing in homeland security and investigations.
