Russia has adapted its nuclear response doctrine to address the specific threat of long-range attacks from Ukraine, which has demonstrated the devastating impact such attacks can have on Russia’s conventional war efforts. President Putin outlined new approaches to the use of nuclear weapons in response to potential threats from Ukraine, which is supported by nuclear-armed states such as the UK, France, and the US. The threat of a first strike has been refreshed in response to recent attacks on Russian logistics hubs by drones of Ukrainian manufacture. These attacks have caused significant damage to Russian ammunition depots, destroying substantial amounts of munitions and disrupting the supply chain.
In response to these attacks, Ukraine has pledged to ramp up the production of drones, aiming to build millions of smaller drones to enhance its military capabilities. Russia has also announced plans to increase its drone production significantly. The EU has proposed a 35 billion euro loan to help Ukraine achieve its production goals, a move supported by the G7. This loan would contribute to the expansion of Ukraine’s defense industry and enhance its ability to defend against Russian aggression.
The escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, including the threat of nuclear war, have raised concerns internationally. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has warned of potential attacks on nuclear power plants by Russia, highlighting the growing risk of a catastrophic escalation in the conflict. The situation remains volatile, with both countries continuing to adapt their strategies in response to the evolving threat landscape.
