At least 46 people, including 37 children and 7 women, drowned while bathing in rivers and ponds swollen by recent floods during a Hindu religious festival in north India. The incidents occurred across 15 districts in Bihar during the annual festival of Jivitputrika Vrat, where women fast for 24 hours and offer prayers for their children’s well-being. The rivers and ponds had been swollen by heavy rains, leading to tragic accidents during the celebrations. This is a rare occurrence in India, as deadly stampedes during religious events are more common. The state government has announced compensation of 400,000 rupees ($4,784) for the families of each deceased victim.
