The Lee’s Summit Fire Department is investigating a fire that occurred at the Oaks Apartments on SW 3 Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The fire started at 9 p.m. in a first-floor apartment and quickly spread to the second and third-floor balconies of the twelve-unit building. Firefighters were able to control the fire, which was confined to one unit that was unoccupied at the time.
Crews located and safely removed one occupant from the apartments above the fire, and no injuries were reported. The fire did not spread to any other units, and the damage was contained to the inside of the one unit where it started. The Red Cross is assisting residents from three of the affected apartments.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe it started in the kitchen. The fire caused significant damage to the inside of the apartment and the exterior of the building. The fire was extinguished by 9:25 p.m., and the scene is currently being investigated by the fire department’s CSI unit.
