Vice Admiral Andrew J. Tiongson, U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Area Commander, has noted an increase in Chinese and Russian navy activities around Alaska and the northern Pacific. He stated that both countries have been conducting operations in the region, sometimes entering the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. The U.S. Coast Guard responds with presence to ensure the foreign vessels are aware of their presence and communicate with them. Encounters with Chinese and Russian ships have been professional so far, with information shared with the U.S. military and Canada.
Tiongson also addressed the situation in the South China Sea between the Philippines and China at Second Thomas Shoal, where China’s Coast Guard has been involved in a standoff over resupplying a Philippine navy ship. The U.S. Coast Guard has been advising and assisting the Philippines, providing guidance on planning but not accompanying vessels. The U.S. Coast Guard has not been asked to provide escorts to Philippine vessels in the region. Tiongson emphasized the need for cooperation and professionalism in managing maritime disputes in the region.
