A recent survey conducted by Lending Tree found that 85% of the 2,000 Americans surveyed believe that inflation is causing pet ownership costs to rise, with 41% stating that they are struggling to afford their pets. This financial strain has resulted in an increase in pets being surrendered to shelters, as owners face difficult decisions. Tam Singer, from the Great Plains SPCA in Merriam, Kansas, reported a significant increase in the number of pets being brought into shelters over the last two years, citing reasons ranging from financial issues to moving or unwanted litters. Additionally, cruelty cases have increased by 75% in the past year, with Singer attributing this rise to a lack of patience and tolerance among pet owners.
The survey also revealed that 76% of respondents noticed an increase in pet food prices and 56% reported an increase in veterinary services costs. As a response to the growing concern over pet affordability, the Pet Resource Center of Kansas City offers services at reduced costs or for free to prevent pet surrenders. They provide a Pet Food Pantry program to help families struggling to afford pet food. Dr. Melia Washington emphasized the importance of keeping pets with their families to prevent them from being surrendered to already overcrowded shelters.
