Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called out China and Brazil for pushing “half-hearted settlement plans” during his address to the UN General Assembly in New York. Zelenskyy urged global leaders to support his 2022 “peace formula” that demands the expulsion of Russian forces from Ukraine and justice for war crimes. He warned against seeking a “lull” instead of a real end to the war, which has lasted over 31 months and claimed hundreds of thousands of casualties.
Zelenskyy’s plea comes as Russian forces make further advances in eastern Ukraine, seizing settlements and intensifying attacks. The Ukrainian president expressed fears of potential Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure, including nuclear power plants, which could have devastating effects beyond Ukraine’s borders.
Zelenskyy will continue to seek support during a meeting with US President Joe Biden at the White House, where he plans to present a revamped “victory plan” and seek authorization to use US-supplied ballistic missiles deeper inside Russian territory. He will also meet with Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump, and Congress to discuss strategies to end the war.
In his address to the UN, Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s strong desire to end the war and urged global leaders to stand with his country in seeking a just and lasting peace.
