The tourism industry in Kansas has made a remarkable comeback, exceeding pre-pandemic levels for the first time in 2023. According to the Kansas Tourism Division, an estimated 37.9 million tourists visited the state, a 4% increase from the previous year. This surge in visitors led to over $8 billion being spent in the local economy, with a significant portion going towards transportation and food and beverage sales.
Tourism had a total economic impact of $13.2 billion in 2023, sustaining almost 100,000 jobs, with a focus on the food and beverage industry. The industry generated $2.2 million in labor income and $823 million in combined state and local tax revenue. While the number of jobs supported by visitors increased in 2023, they still fell short of pre-pandemic levels.
Bridgette Jobe, the director of the Kansas Tourism Division, believes that the state is well-positioned to attract new visitors. She emphasized that travelers are looking for authentic experiences, open spaces, affordability, and stress-free vacations, all of which Kansas can provide. To capitalize on this momentum, the tourism division has increased its budget for marketing efforts.
The division’s budget nearly doubled between fiscal years 2023 and 2024, with a continued investment in marketing to keep Kansas top of mind for travelers. The budget for fiscal year 2025 will remain around $5 million. With one out of every 22 jobs in the state existing because of the travel and tourism industry, Kansas is poised to continue its growth as a top destination for visitors seeking unique and memorable experiences.
