A man has been charged with attempted assassination after allegedly lurking outside Donald Trump’s south Florida golf course with a gun and writing about his desire to kill the former president. Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, faces five counts in federal court, including attempted assassination, possessing a firearm in a crime of violence, assaulting a federal officer, felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Prosecutors outlined evidence of a murder plot, including a note left behind by Routh stating his intent to kill Trump. Authorities believe Routh staked out the golf course for a month before hiding outside the fence near the sixth hole and aiming a rifle at a Secret Service agent on site. The agent fired at Routh, who fled but was later caught. Before the alleged assassination attempt, Routh had a history of run-ins with the law, including convictions for illegally possessing a machine gun and multiple counts of possession of stolen goods. The Department of Justice is committed to holding Routh accountable and ensuring that violence against public officials is not tolerated.
