35 Writers, including Jonathan Coe and Kit de Waal, unite in ‘Protest Zine’ to safeguard Birmingham libraries

Renowned novelist Jonathan Coe, along with other writers such as Kit de Waal and Anna Metcalfe, are part of a newly launched protest zine called Brum Library Zine, which aims to raise awareness about proposed cuts to library services by Birmingham city council. Led by poet Liz Berry and novelist Catherine O’Flynn, the project paired writers with community libraries for micro-residencies to create original works. The zine features stories, poetry, memoir, flash fiction, and a short play inspired by Selly Oak library.

The project was born out of a desire to highlight the importance of libraries in the community, especially in areas like Birmingham where literacy challenges are prevalent. The proposed budget cuts include reductions to the library budget, potential closure of seven libraries, and reduced hours for others. This has sparked concern about access to these vital community spaces, particularly for children living in poverty who rely on libraries for resources and education.

The zine, designed by artist and librarian Tom Hicks, has been distributed for free at libraries across Birmingham, and a crowdfunding campaign raised over £1,000 to cover printing costs. The creators of the zine hope it will inspire people to join the Birmingham Loves Libraries campaign, write to their MPs, and attend library consultation meetings to advocate for the preservation of these valuable resources. The collective effort of writers, artists, and community members aims to make a stand against the perceived devaluation of libraries in the face of economic pressures.
