The Missouri Supreme Court has ruled that Amendment 3, an abortion-rights amendment, will stay on the ballot for the November election. This decision comes after a county circuit judge and Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft had previously called for its removal, stating that it did not meet legal requirements and was misleading.
Abortion rights activists appealed the removal in Jefferson City, arguing that the amendment would provide constitutional protection for abortion in Missouri, following the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and Missouri immediately banning almost all abortions.
The Missouri Supreme Court’s decision to reverse the circuit court’s judgment means that Amendment 3 will be on the November 2024 general election ballot. The petition for the amendment had gathered 380,000 signatures, but had been deemed misleading and not in compliance with legal requirements by Ashcroft and the circuit judge.
Attorneys supporting Amendment 3 filed a motion to hold Ashcroft in contempt and to recertify the amendment, although Ashcroft’s office had no comment on the matter. The ruling by the Missouri Supreme Court ultimately decided the fate of Amendment 3, allowing voters in Missouri to have their say on abortion rights in the upcoming election.
