Mayor Lucas submits legal document regarding Missouri abortion legislation.

Missouri’s Supreme Court is set to hear an argument regarding an amendment on abortion rights potentially making it onto the November ballot. This comes after Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft decertified the amendment, which aimed to provide the right to reproductive freedom, including abortion up until fetal viability around 24 weeks. A trial court judge ruled that the full text of the amendment failed to mention specific laws to be repealed if approved by voters, violating state law.

The amendment’s supporters filed a motion for Ashcroft to be held in contempt and recertify the amendment, but Ashcroft’s office had no comment. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas and the Public Rights Project submitted a brief supporting reproductive health rights in the Supreme Court.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Mayor Lucas believes the State Supreme Court will allow the vote to take place in November. Whether the amendment’s presence on the ballot will impact other major races remains uncertain, with polls showing that it may not play a significant role.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday morning in Jefferson City, with a swift ruling expected due to the approaching ballot deadline. FOX4 will provide coverage of the court proceedings.
