A 14-year-old student named Colt Gray fatally shot four people at Apalachee High School in Georgia. His father, Colin Gray, had given him an AR-15 style rifle as a gift after the two were interviewed by law enforcement for threats of carrying out a school shooting. The teenager had shown interest in prior mass shootings, including the one at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. The FBI received a tip about threats to commit a shooting at a middle school from a user on the chat platform Discord, traced to the teen’s father. However, investigative documents showed inconsistencies that led to the case being cleared. The teenager denied making any online threats and expressed concern about being accused. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith stated that local authorities had properly investigated the previous tips, but the teenager did not commit a crime at the time. Some students, like Isaiah Hooks, expressed difficulty accepting that the authorities were aware of and monitored the teen. Hooks believed that the threat should have been included in the teen’s transcript to prevent such a tragedy. The incident has raised questions about the steps taken by law enforcement in response to the threats made by the teenager prior to the shooting.
