The Kansas Hospital Association recently honored Wichita State University President Richard Muma for his leadership in developing the $300 million biomedical campus in downtown Wichita. The campus will integrate health education programs from WSU and the University of Kansas-Wichita’s medical and pharmacy schools. The first phase of the project is set to be operational in spring 2027.
Muma received the Donald Wilson Visionary Award from KHA for his work on the project, which aims to create a seamless pipeline for health education from high school to postgraduate medical education. The project is inspired by the success of the Innovation Campus at WSU.
State Senator Carolyn McGinn was also recognized by KHA for her 20 years of service in the Senate and her efforts to establish a behavioral health hospital in southwest Wichita. The new state hospital under construction will provide much-needed psychiatric beds for Kansans seeking humane and dignified care closer to home.
Dennis Franks, CEO of Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center, received the Charles Billings Award for his distinguished service in the healthcare field. KHA president and CEO Chad Austin commended Franks for his advocacy on health care access and delivery models.
KHA, a voluntary nonprofit organization, represents 237 member facilities, including 121 full-service community hospitals. The organization serves as the leading advocate and resource for healthcare facilities across Kansas.
