The eastbound I-70 Lewis and Clark Viaduct over the Kansas River in KCK has been closed for repairs, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). Engineers identified concerns with gusset plates in the eastbound lanes during a recent inspection, requiring repairs to be made. KDOT expects the bridge to be closed for the rest of the year, with work beginning in about a month.
While the closure may be inconvenient for travelers, KDOT emphasized that the safety of the public is their top priority. KDOT Secretary Calvin Reed stated that the decision to close the bridge was made to ensure the safety of those who use it. The closure will be a challenge for those who live, work, and travel in the area, especially with other Kansas River crossings also closed. However, KDOT is committed to completing the repairs as quickly as possible to reopen the bridge to traffic.
In other news, a man known as ‘ChiefsAholic’ has been sentenced in a bank robbery and money laundering scheme. This incident is unrelated to the bridge closure. KDOT is expected to provide updates on the bridge repairs as work progresses.
