Families in New Century, Kan., got a unique opportunity this weekend to experience a piece of history with the Friends of Army Aviation. Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Hugh L. Mills highlighted the significance of the UH-1 Huey helicopter, a symbol of hope for Vietnam veterans during the war. The iconic aircraft took passengers on rides over the Commemorative Air Force Museum, giving them a small glimpse into the experiences of soldiers like Retired Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran David M.
Passengers, including families like the Richters, described the experience of flying in the Huey as both exhilarating and emotional. The opportunity to ride in the helicopter provided a deeper understanding of the challenges soldiers faced during the war.
Mills, who flew Hueys during the Vietnam conflict, emphasized the importance of providing families with a chance to connect with the history of the aircraft and the sacrifices made by those who served. The Huey will remain at the New Century Airport before embarking on a journey to Fort Leavenworth and Topeka for more ride-alongs, giving more people a chance to experience this unique piece of military history.
