State Treasurer Steven Johnson announced a bipartisan settlement in a multistate litigation against Delaware over unclaimed property from MoneyGram, which will result in $1.5 million being forwarded to Kansas for distribution to consumers. The dispute stemmed from Delaware’s actions to redirect uncashed checks from MoneyGram solely to Delaware instead of back to states where they were purchased. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the states’ rights last year, leading to this settlement.
The settlement requires $102 million in unclaimed property reported by MoneyGram to Delaware from 2011 to 2017 to be transferred to Kansas and other states in the coalition. Additionally, an estimated $89 million from 2018 to 2022 will be shared among all 50 states. State Treasurer Johnson emphasized that this settlement will help reunite Kansans with over $1.5 million in missing MoneyGram funds wrongfully held by Delaware.
Kansas will take the lead in outreach efforts to return the $1.55 million to rightful owners who make justified claims. People can search for their funds on the state treasurer’s website. Delaware’s Director of Unclaimed Property, Brenda Mayrack, expressed satisfaction with closing this matter through the historic interstate settlement agreement.
Other states involved in the settlement include Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Arkansas. Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin applauded the end of nearly eight years of litigation and thanked coalition partners for their hard work. This settlement marks a significant step in resolving the dispute over unclaimed property from MoneyGram and ensuring funds reach their rightful owners.
