The Kansas volleyball team kicked off their season with a strong showing at the Duke Tournament in Durham, North Carolina, winning all three matches. Led by head coach Ray Bechard, the Jayhawks defeated South Carolina, Duke, and Colgate with veteran middle blocker Toyosi Onabanjo leading the team in kills. Onabanjo’s impressive 22-kill performance against Duke helped the Jayhawks secure a comeback victory after dropping the first set. The team also saw strong contributions from Caroline Bien, Ayah Elnady, and Camryn Turner throughout the weekend.
The Jayhawks will now return home to face Wichita State at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, before heading to Milwaukee for another weekend tournament. With a No. 13 national ranking, the team is looking to build on their early success and continue their winning streak. Freshmen Zoey Burgess, Heidi Devers, Ellie Moore, and Grace Nelson also made their debut for the team, adding depth and talent to an already strong roster.
The Jayhawks’ impressive start to the season has fans excited for what’s to come, as they look to improve on their performance from last year and make a push for the postseason. Coach Bechard is optimistic about the team’s growth and development, and is confident that they have the potential to compete at a high level this season. Stay tuned for more updates on the Kansas volleyball team as they continue their journey in the 2024 season.
