North Korean leader Kim Jong Un commemorated the 71st anniversary of the Korean War armistice by visiting a cemetery near Pyongyang. During his visit, the 40-year-old leader paid tribute to veterans of the 1950-53 war at memorials, including the Tower of Friendship dedicated to Chinese People’s Liberation Army soldiers who fought alongside North Korea. The event occurred on Friday, but North Korean state media usually report news a day later.
The armistice agreement was signed on July 27, 1953, by North Korea, the United States, and China, ending a three-year war. While North Korea continues to celebrate its version of history, it is important to note that the consensus among historians is that North Korea initiated the war. Kim Jong Un’s visit to the cemetery serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of the conflict and highlights his commitment to upholding the ideals of past generations who fought in the war.
