Colombian squad for Olympics includes KU luminary Salazar


Kansas Athletics Hall of Famer Liana Salazar is currently representing Colombia at the Olympics in Paris, marking her third Olympic appearance. Despite not playing in Colombia’s first game, Salazar is ready as a substitute for upcoming matches against New Zealand and Canada.

The 31-year-old midfielder first competed in the Olympics in 2012 in London while still a part of the KU soccer team. She later participated in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games after graduating from KU. Salazar has also played in a World Cup and two Copa América competitions, scoring goals against Argentina and Chile.

At the club level, Salazar currently plays for Millonarios FC in her hometown of Bogotá, with previous stints at Independiente Santa Fe and Brazilian club Corinthians. During her time at KU, she was a key player under coach Mark Francis, earning accolades such as All-American honors and ranking high in career goals and points for the Jayhawks.

In 2023, Salazar was inducted into the KU Athletics Hall of Fame, highlighting her successful career both at the collegiate and international levels. Her presence at the Olympics not only showcases her talent but also serves as a testament to her dedication and perseverance in the sport.
