U.S. Senator Jerry Moran recently visited the University of Kansas Health System campus to celebrate a federal appropriation of $10 million for the KU Cancer Center and $10 million earmarked for cardiovascular equipment. During his visit, Moran emphasized the importance of ongoing funding for cancer research and treatment, noting that there is still work to be done in the fight against cancer.
Roy Jensen, director of the KU Cancer Center, expressed optimism about the future of cancer research and treatment, citing the new federal funding as a crucial step forward. With plans to build a state-of-the-art cancer facility on the Kansas City campus, KU Chancellor Doug Girod believes this will be a game-changer for generations to come, bringing together cutting-edge research and patient care under one vision.
The KU Cancer Center has received significant support in recent years, including a $100 million gift from the Sunderland Foundation in 2023 and a $43 million federal appropriation announced by Moran in 2021. The 2024 Kansas Legislature also approved a $75 million matching grant appropriation for the project.
Bob Page, president and CEO of KU Health System, expressed his personal appreciation for the federal support, having been treated for prostate cancer at KU Health System and now standing cancer-free. The funding and investments in cancer research and treatment at the KU Cancer Center are seen as critical in providing hope to patients and making progress against this devastating disease.
