Early voting for the Aug. 6 primary election has begun in Shawnee County, Kansas. The ballot includes races for Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District, Kansas House of Representatives, Kansas Senate, Kansas State Board of Education, Shawnee County Commission, and various county offices.
In the 2nd Congressional District, Republican primary candidates include Jeff Kahrs, Michael A. Ogle, Derek Schmidt, Shawn Tiffany, and Chad Young. Democratic primary candidates are Nancy Boyda and Matt Kleinmann.
In the Kansas House of Representatives, many districts have uncontested primaries leading up to the general election. Notable contested races include House District 58 with Democratic primary candidates Wendy Damman-Bednar and Alexis Simmons facing off against Republican Michael Mathewson.
In the Kansas Senate, contested primaries are taking place in Senate District 19 and District 20. Senate District 3 and 18 have incumbents running uncontested in their primaries.
The Kansas State Board of Education sees contested races in District 4 among Republicans Nancy Moneymaker, Gina Montalbano Zesiger, and Connie O’Brien, while District 6 will have a general election contest between Beryl Ann New and Bruce Schultz.
Seats on the Shawnee County Commission are up for election, with District 2 Democratic incumbent Commissioner Kevin Cook facing a primary challenge from Robert Soria, and District 3 Republican incumbent Commissioner Aaron D. Mays facing a primary challenge from Brett M. Blackburn.
Additionally, various county offices have uncontested primaries, including Shawnee County district attorney Mike Kagay and sheriff Brian C. Hill, among others.
The election also includes township races and positions for political party precinct committeemen and committeewomen. Voters are encouraged to participate in the democratic process and make their voices heard in these important local and state elections.
