A 15-year-old involved in the shooting during the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl rally has been sentenced to a state facility for youths. The teen, referred to as R.G., expressed remorse at his hearing, stating that his involvement was out of character for him. The shooting resulted in the death of a local radio host, injuries to 25 individuals, and various other injuries to 69 others as they tried to flee the scene.
Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two groups, with Lyndell Mays being accused of firing the first shot. R.G. then shot towards Mays, hitting another person in his group, Dominic Miller. Despite his actions, the judge overseeing the case emphasized that the teen’s poor decisions did not define his character.
The teen will undergo a commitment at a state Department of Youth Services facility for 9 to 12 months. His admission to the unlawful use of a weapon charge was accepted, while a separate armed criminal action charge was dismissed. The teen’s attorney requested he be placed under intensive supervision and house arrest, but the judge and prosecutors argued that time in the youth facility would help remove him from negative peer influences.
Two other teens involved in the shooting are also facing charges, with one ruled to not face prosecution as an adult and the other being detained on gun-related charges that do not warrant adult trial. The community is still reeling from the tragic events that unfolded during what was meant to be a celebration for the Kansas City Chiefs.
