Teen allegedly involved in train derailment, filmed the aftermath and shared it on social media

A 17-year-old Nebraska teenager has been charged with two felony counts of criminal mischief for allegedly causing a train to derail in Bennet on April 21. The teenager recorded the crash and posted the video on YouTube under the account name ZUnit06. The teenager approached authorities after the crash and showed them the video, claiming he was a train enthusiast. Prosecutors are seeking to have the case transferred to adult court.

Court documents show that the teenager tampered with a rail, causing two locomotives and five loaded BNSF cars to jump the rails. One car crashed into an empty coal car, causing $350,000 in damage. The train conductor attempted to make an emergency stop, but the collision occurred before he could prevent it. The investigator noted that a padlock that was supposed to be attached to the switch was missing.

The teenager denied trespassing in the area and tampering with the switch, but evidence suggests otherwise. Authorities discovered a tripod near the accident site just before the derailment, and the teenager knew how the switch worked. The YouTube account associated with the teenager features videos of trains in Bennet and other locations in Lancaster County.

Lancaster County Attorney Patrick F. Condon declined to comment on the case. The teenager faces serious charges for his actions in causing the derailment and recording the crash for upload on YouTube.
