Man arrested for murder of Kansas City woman that sparked 8-hour standoff

Juan Maiden, a 70-year-old man from Kansas City, Missouri, is facing charges of second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action after an eight-hour standoff with police. The standoff occurred after a woman, identified as 54-year-old D L O’Hara, was found shot and killed inside a house off Blue Ridge Boulevard.

The incident took place on Tuesday, July 23, when police responded to a shooting near Thompson and Booth Avenue and received a call that a woman had been shot inside the same house. Witnesses informed officers that Maiden was inside the residence and had shot the victim.

Police were able to enter the house through a window and found the victim in the hallway with a gunshot wound to her head. She was taken to North Kansas City Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A witness reported that Maiden had entered the room and shot the victim unprovoked, leading to a physical altercation during which the witness was able to grab the gun and attempt to shoot Maiden, only to find it empty.

After the standoff, Maiden was found in the basement with injuries to his head and face, and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. He made his first court appearance on Thursday in Jackson County court.

The charges against Maiden include second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. The incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and gun violence in our communities.
