The House passed a resolution for a bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. The task force will review federal, state, and local law enforcement actions leading up to the incident. The resolution was supported by 416 members, with 16 not voting. The committee will include seven Republicans and six Democrats and is expected to submit a final report to the House by December 13 with legislative reform recommendations to prevent future security lapses. House Speaker Mike Johnson stressed the importance of protecting leaders regardless of party affiliation. The task force, which will have subpoena power, aims to understand what went wrong, ensure accountability, and avoid future failures. The Department of Homeland Security is also reviewing Secret Service planning and preparedness related to the shooting. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle recently resigned after facing criticism from both parties during her testimony before the House Oversight Committee. The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was identified as a suspicious person before the attack and reportedly flew a drone over the venue before the incident. Crooks was killed by the Secret Service during the attack, which resulted in the death of a rallygoer and injuries to two others, including Trump.
