In a high-scoring game, the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Kansas City Royals 10-8 on Thursday night. Jonny DeLuca and Brandon Lowe hit home runs, with eight Rays players contributing RBIs to secure the win. Pitcher Zach Eflin picked up his first win in five road starts despite allowing six runs over five innings. On the Royals side, Alec Marsh struggled, giving up five runs in just three innings, while the bullpen couldn’t contain the Rays offense.
Michael Massey and Bobby Witt Jr. hit home runs for the Royals, who tried to mount a comeback but fell short. Witt was thrown out while trying to steal second in the sixth inning, ending a potential rally. Pete Fairbanks closed out the game for the Rays, earning his 14th save.
Both teams had key players dealing with injuries, as Massey made his return to the field after a lower back issue forced him on the injured list, and Adam Frazier began a rehab stint for a thumb strain.
The Rays, who have won 11 of their last 16 games, continue to find success and are above .500 with a 43-42 record. Looking ahead, the Rays have yet to announce a starter for their next game, while the Royals will face the Rockies with Cole Ragans taking the mound. Tampa Bay’s Shane Baz is expected to pitch in place of Aaron Civale, who was recently traded to the Brewers.
