Beryl Strengthens as it Nears Mexico’s Coast

Hurricane Beryl restrengthened to a Category 3 storm as it approached the Yucatán Peninsula and Mexico, causing nine deaths in various countries. Mexico’s President urged people to move to higher ground for safety. The storm is expected to make landfall in Tulum, bringing damaging winds and a storm surge of up to 5 feet. Hurricane warnings are in place along the Yucatán Peninsula coast from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancún, including Cozumel. Beryl is forecasted to weaken after landfall, move into the Gulf of Mexico, and potentially regain some strength before moving towards northeastern Mexico or southern Texas. The storm set records for rapid intensification and strength, becoming the first Category 4 hurricane on record to form in June and the strongest hurricane recorded in July when it briefly reached Category 5 status. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency of rapid intensification to climate change and rising sea surface temperatures.
