Two people have been identified as the victims of a tragic multi-vehicle crash involving a school bus in Clay County, Missouri. The crash occurred on Wednesday at the intersection of 92 Highway and A Highway, between Kearney and Smithville.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the accident happened when a 2012 Ford Fusion was attempting to make a turn on westbound 92 Highway and was struck by a 2014 Toyota Scion. The impact caused the Scion to veer into oncoming traffic and collide with a school bus traveling eastbound. The Scion then spun around and hit a 2023 Ford Explorer.
Sadly, two passengers in the Scion lost their lives in the accident. They have been identified as 35-year-old Iris Vallares Barahona and Griselda Rodriguez Apolinar, both residents of Kansas City, Missouri. The driver of the Scion sustained serious injuries and was taken to Liberty Hospital.
There were 17 students and four adults on the school bus at the time of the crash, with two students being taken to the hospital for minor injuries. The students belonged to the Gallatin School District and were returning from a conference in Florida.
The Gallatin School District released a statement expressing relief that all students and staff on the bus were safe and accounted for. The district thanked its staff for their quick response and cooperation with local authorities.
