Many Gen Zers such as Nikki Sanjongco are turning away from dating apps and seeking to meet people in person, but struggle with flirting and social anxiety. Dating apps have made it difficult for young people to gauge romantic interest and have created superficial connections that prioritize validation and attention. The pandemic has also hindered Gen Z’s ability to develop flirting skills, as many started college under lockdown. Despite these challenges, there is a growing interest in in-person events and “rejection therapy” on platforms like TikTok to help young people overcome their fear of rejection and put themselves out there more. Flirting should ultimately be fun and authentic, with no expectations of a certain outcome. Camras and Williams both emphasize the importance of detaching from expectations and focusing on enjoying the moment and creating positive experiences for both parties involved. Ultimately, young people are navigating the challenges of dating in real life while seeking authentic connections and opportunities to expand their social skills.
