Protesters disrupted a performance of the Broadway musical “Suffs,” a Tony Award-winning show about the suffragist movement, by unfurling a banner with the slogan “Suffs Is a White Wash” and chanting “Cancel ‘Suffs!'” The protest lasted for 20 seconds before the demonstrators were removed by theater staff. The show’s producers, including Hillary Clinton, stated that the safety of the actors and audience was not compromised. The protesters criticized the musical as a “betrayal” of feminism, describing it as “rehashed white feminism.”
The musical addresses the role of racism in the suffragist movement and acknowledges the contributions of Black women to the fight for voting rights. This was the second disruptive incident on Broadway in recent months, following a protest during the show “An Enemy of the People.” The group behind the protest described themselves as “radical, anti-racist, queer feminists.” The show’s creators did not directly respond to the group’s complaints but highlighted the themes of racial justice within the production.
Despite the disruption, “Suffs” continues to receive accolades, having won two Tony Awards at last month’s ceremony. The incident sheds light on the ongoing conversations around diversity and representation in the entertainment industry, emphasizing the importance of intersectionality in storytelling and activism.
