Opposition leader Lotfi Mraihi of Tunisia taken into custody | Political developments hit headlines

Lotfi Mraihi, leader of Tunisia’s Republican Union Party and a prominent critic of President Kais Saied, has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering as he announced his intention to run in the upcoming presidential election set for October. His arrest adds to a growing list of political opponents of President Saied who are either in jail or facing prosecution.

Opposition parties have accused Saied’s government of pressuring the judiciary to target his rivals in the election in order to pave the way for his reelection. While Saied has not officially confirmed his candidacy, he is widely expected to seek a second term, having previously stated he would not hand power to “nonpatriots.”

Several other potential candidates, including Abir Moussi, Safi Saeed, Nizar Chaari, Abd Ellatif Mekki, and Mondher Znaidi, are also facing prosecution on various charges such as fraud, money laundering, and corruption. The opposition argues that fair and credible elections can only be held if imprisoned politicians are released and the media is allowed to operate without government pressure.

In 2021, President Saied seized extensive powers, dissolved parliament, ruled by decree, and oversaw the writing of a new constitution that established a presidential system and weakened parliament. Saied justified his actions as necessary to combat corruption among the political elite.

The crackdown on opposition figures, including businessmen, media personalities, and politicians, has raised concerns about the state of democracy in Tunisia. Critics view these actions as a power grab and a threat to the country’s democratic institutions.
