Texas U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett has called for President Joe Biden to withdraw as the Democratic nominee following a poor performance in a recent debate. Doggett, the first congressional Democrat to do so, cited concerns about Trump potentially regaining power. Despite acknowledging his shaky debate performance, Biden has maintained he is fit for the job and remains a better alternative to Trump. However, other Democrats have raised concerns about Biden’s performance, prompting speculation that he may withdraw before officially being nominated next month. Leading Democrats, such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have remained supportive of Biden in public. Plans to nominate Biden as the official presidential candidate before the Democratic National Convention in late August are still moving forward. Despite the controversy, Biden has continued with his regular schedule, focusing on addressing extreme weather concerns. While Democrats are divided on Biden’s future, his campaign will continue as scheduled until any final decisions are made in July. Supporters of a potential Biden withdrawal, such as Rep. Jim Clyburn, have suggested Vice President Kamala Harris as a potential replacement if Biden were to step down. Regardless of the internal divisions, the Democratic Party is continuing to plan for the upcoming presidential election in November.
