GOP Rivals Schmidt and Kahrs in Kansas Celebrate Supreme Court Opinion on Presidential Immunity • Kansas Reflector

In a recent press conference in Topeka, two attorneys vying for the Republican Party’s nomination in Kansas’ second congressional district expressed support for the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to shield presidents from prosecution for actions carried out as part of their official duties. Former Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Jeff Kahrs, a former Trump administration official, lauded the 6-3 decision as a victory for the “rule of law.”

Kahrs, who studied at Washburn University law school and served in the Department of Health and Human Services under Trump, criticized what he described as politically motivated prosecutions against Trump, emphasizing that the rule of law will prevail when Trump is reelected. Schmidt, a University of Kansas law school graduate, applauded the Supreme Court for deterring politically motivated legal actions against former presidents.

The decision complicates Trump’s prosecution for alleged wrongdoing related to the 2020 election and 2016 sex scandal, with his lawyers seeking to have his conviction overturned based on the Supreme Court ruling. Schmidt and Kahrs are running in a five-candidate GOP primary race for the 2nd District seat, currently held by Rep. Jake LaTurner, who will not be seeking reelection in 2024.

The attorneys’ support for the Supreme Court’s decision reflects a broader ideological debate over presidential immunity and the separation of powers in the United States. The upcoming primary race will likely see further discussions on this issue as candidates vie for the party’s nomination in a closely watched contest.
