China witnesses rare mass deportation as over 100 Chinese migrants expelled by US

The US Department of Homeland Security has announced the return of 116 Chinese migrants in a large charter flight, marking the first such flight in five years. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the enforcement of immigration laws and the removal of individuals without legal status in the US. The flight occurred over the weekend amid heightened political debate ahead of the US presidential election concerning Chinese immigration.

Efforts are being made to work with China to deter irregular migration and disrupt human smuggling activities through increased law enforcement. China has been reluctant to accept its nationals back from the US, leading to challenges in deportation efforts. Last year, there was a significant increase in the number of Chinese immigrants entering the US illegally from Mexico, with over 37,000 Chinese nationals arrested on the southern border, a tenfold increase from the previous year.

Concerns have been raised about the anti-Chinese rhetoric potentially leading to harassment of Asians. Meanwhile, Chinese migrants have stated that they are fleeing poverty and repression in search of better opportunities. Earlier this year, the US and China resumed cooperation on migration issues, with China reiterating its opposition to illegal immigration.

Efforts are also being made in other countries to curb illegal migration routes. The US announced a deal with Panama to cover the costs of repatriating migrants entering the country illegally. Ecuador has reinstated visas for Chinese nationals, citing a rise in irregular migration, and becoming a popular starting point for Chinese migrants heading north to the US. These developments highlight the ongoing challenges and efforts to manage Chinese immigration and cooperate with China on migration issues.
